The Allen Lab is excited to welcome two new undergraduate students, Jeffrey Butler and Gabriela Alvarez for Summer 2018!
Jeffrey is a Senior, Dual Degree Applied Physics, and Mechanical Engineering Major at Morehouse College. He will be participating in a 10-week program with the Allen Research Lab. Jeffrey will focus on the process of “Electrospinning Polydimethylsiloxane”. This innovative process will open the door to many milestones in medicine. Jeffrey’s career interest include obtaining his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, diving into oil exploration, and jet propulsion. A fun fact about Jeffrey is that he is an Eagle Scout and a thrower on the Morehouse Track and Field team. Moreover, he will Study Abroad for the fall semester in Accra, Ghana; at the University of Ghana.
Gabriela is part of the California Pre-Doctoral Program Sally Casanova, and she has recently graduated from California State University, Northridge with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology. For this summer, Gabriela will work on a project involving the study of stem cell differentiation and the engineering of biomaterials that can be applied to tissue engineering and regeneration. Gabriela’s career interest include obtaining an M.D.-Ph.D. degree to help patients who suffer from autoimmune diseases or who are in need of an organ transplant. A fun fact about Gabriela is that she grew up in the tropical forests of Peru and that she knows basic ASL.
Both Jeffrey and Gabriela became interested in the Allen lab at the University of Florida, following a visit by Dr. Allen to Morehouse College and California State University Northridge, respectively.
Jeffrey is funded in full and Gabriella is funded in part by the National Science Foundation CAREER award to Dr. Allen. They represent the 3rd summer of Allen Lab REU to bring underrepresented minority undergraduate students to work in the lab.

The Allen Lab is excited to welcome two new undergraduate students, Brandon Applewhite and Zion Iverson!
Brandon is a junior Chemical Engineering major at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL and will be visiting the Allen Lab to participate in a 10-week research program, working in the area of tissue engineering and drug delivery. Brandon’s career interest include obtaining his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and work to develop novel treatment and prevention strategies for patients with Alzheimer’s disease. A fun fact about Brandon is that he is an identical twin and has family roots in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.
Zion is a junior, University of Florida student who is a participant in the SF2UF program. Zion will work this summer on a project involving biomaterials for wound healing and tissue regeneration. Zion’s career interest include attending medical school and becoming a trauma surgeon. She is interested in practicing medicine in developing and war-torn nations and participating in Doctors Without Borders. A fun fact about Zion is that she has worked on ambulances as Emergency Medical Technician.
